Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life!

Moses and the Ten Commandments

“Therefore as the fire devoured the stubble, and the flame consumed the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust: because they have cast away the Law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.”  Isaiah 5:234

Moses was a spiritually enlightened spirit-soul with an extraordinary understanding of God and man who lived over 3,000 years ago.  He led over 600,000 people out of Egypt, through the wilderness, into the new Holy Land.  But at a metaphysical level, Moses symbolizes our own Divine Seed and its unfoldment.  Similarly, his experiences typify our own life experiences and states of mind as our humanness gives way to the Divine, and our Christ (God) Consciousness arises triumphant and victorious.

He was born in ancient Egypt at the time that Pharaoh (unchecked ego) mandates death to all male children of the Israelites (Divine Seen in man).  However, his birth Mother saves him by hiding him in a basket at the river’s edge. Moses’ sister was directed by their Mother to guard the basket.  But Pharaoh’s daughter finds him when she goes to bathe in the river and upon seeing the crying infant, her heart was touched and she decided to keep the infant for herself.  However, seeing Moses’ sister hiding in the bushes, she orders the girl to fetch a nursemaid for the infant.  The clever girl, brought back Moses’ birth mother.

“Take this child away and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. (Exodus 2:9)

The King’s Daughter represents our feminine, emotional aspect, sensitive to Truth.  The infant Moses symbolizes higher teachings that draw out our hearts.  We nourish the infant Moses through prayer and meditation.  Otherwise the infant will starve.  However, if we nurse the infant, we receive wages… wages of freedom, peace, harmony, understanding, and the fellowship of God.

“And God heart their groaning, and God remembered his covenant…and had respect unto them.”  (Exodus 2:24-25)

Moses grew up as the adopted son of Pharaoh’s daughter.  As such, he received all the privileges and training of royalty, including induction into the Egyptian Mystery Schools where he becomes an enlightened high priest.  However, as the years pass, he witnesses the bondage and oppression of his people, symbolic of the bondage and oppression of our spirits suffered when we are attached to outer things and material pursuits, like the Egyptians.

As their cry goes up to God, Moses leads his people out of their bondage into a better life, into the Promised Land.  He does so by forsaking the wealth and power of Pharaoh; by entering and leading himself and his people safely through their wilderness…deep into their subconscious minds, deep into their souls to cleanse, purify, harmonize and heal themselves.  And at the time of their most uncertainty, moral laxness and confusion, Moses ascends Mount Sinai, turns to God, and prays.  God answers the prayer by giving Moses certain tenets, precepts, for Life, which we know as the Ten Commandments.

Symbolically, the mountain means prayer – elevated consciousness.  At the time of Moses, the general public was prohibited from climbing Mount Sinai unless they wanted to elevate their consciousness, to become High Priests.  And to do so, they had to be free of any faults and weakness – otherwise we cannot elevate our consciousness and get our contact with God.  .

On the surface, the commandments prescribe moral guidance.   But people need something more to free themselves from life’s strife and struggle.   Therefore,

Moses designed the Ten Commandments (Laws of Life) so that the higher we go spiritually or the deeper we go intellectually, the more understanding we get out of the commandments.  This is in keeping with the principle of “by Right of Consciousness”.

Deep laws are concealed within these commandments for those who are ready for them.  Within the depths of these laws, there are even deeper spiritual teachings for those who are ready by Right of Consciousness.

These ten Laws of Life are things that “cannot” be done because they conflict with the fundament Law of Being – we reap what we sow.  Therefore, don’t waste your life by trying to do them.

First Commandment

“I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.  Thou shalt have no other gods before me.”  (Exodus 20: 2-3)

This commandment states that God alone frees us from suffering and bondage of the external world.  When we turn to the external world, to others, to our own will power, to our ego, etc. to solve our problems or bring us joy, we are turning to lesser gods in lieu of God.  God symbolizes a raised consciousness – the Christ Consciousness within.

 Second Commandment

“Thou shalt not take unto thee any graven image…for I the Lord thy God is a jealous God.” (Exodus 20:4)

Whenever you give power to anything (other people, forms, affects, and conditions) but God, we are making that thing into a graven image.  For example, when we give power to our ailments, we are making graven images.  When we take power away from them, we heal them.

When we give power to anything but God, we lost God altogether.  We cannot have only a part of God; either God is the only power, or God is nothing at all.  Thus God is said to be “jealous”.  By jealous, we mean God, all of God, must have first place in our hearts and minds.

Third Commandment

“Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh this name in vain.”  (Exodus 20:7)

The name of God is your conviction concerning God.  Your idea of God will determine your whole life.  If you believe that God is life, love, intelligence and goodness and that God is all-powerful, all the conditions of your life will steadily improve.  If you believe God is intelligent, but not good, you are inviting in the “bad” - sickness and trouble of all sorts.  God doesn’t send sickness and trouble; you are merely attracting them by virtue of your beliefs until you revise your thinking regarding the nature of God.  “It is done unto you as you believe”.   We all have a tendency to limit God in some way in our thoughts, consciously or unconsciously; consequently, we suffer limitation and fear in some way – for we cannot take the name of God in vain.

 Fourth Commandment

“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy”.  (Exodus 20:8)

Seek the Presence of God everywhere, in everything and everyone, particularly when trouble appears.  For God will bring faith where there is fear and doubt; love where there is hatred;  hope where there is despair;  and abundance where there is lack.  God is our unlimited source for all.

In daily prayers, when we recognize God is working in, through, and all about us, including in our daily affairs and troubles, every day becomes a holy day, every day becomes the Sabbath.   As our consciousness arises, we lose the distinction between the secular and sacred; every moment and all things become sacred.  God is present everywhere and at all times.  It is always the Sabbath Day and we are always standing on Holy Ground.

 Fifth Commandment

“Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee”.  (Exodus 20:12)

Our real Mother and Father is God.  We need to honor God.  However, in this commandment, God is broken down into two poles, male and female.  Metaphysically, polarity is the motive power of the universe.  By Mother, we mean our “feeling” nature (heart); by father, we mean our “analytical”, knowledge based, nature (mind).  Most people do not have these poles well integrated and give preference to one or the other, forming a part of their personality.  However, it is our job to integrate them and keep them balanced, particularly in prayer.  Our feelings determine the intensity of our prayers, and act as a catalyst, making them demonstrate.  However, content of our prayers is of equal concern.  Beware of what you ask for.  Thus, our prayers need to be a balance of heart and mind. Our prayers fail to demonstrate when we do not honor both our father and mother.

 Sixth Commandment

“Thou shalt not kill.” (Exodus 20:13)

Point of fact, “Thou canst not”!  This commandment expresses the cosmic law that you cannot kill.  We may think we can kill anything, but this invites trouble in that we will have to meet and reconcile in the future, in keeping with the Law of Karma.  Furthermore, no one ever dies in the sense of total obliteration.  From time to time, we may shed our bodies, but our spirit-souls are eternal and immortal.

We must realize that nobody can hurt us unless we allow them to. Nothing ever dies from external influences or forces; no one is every destroyed from the outside.  No one can kill your character, peace of mind, business, relationships, reputation or anything that is yours.  Only you can through faulty thinking!  Often we waste our lives blaming others for our hurts, injuries, problems, and conditions of our life. But as long as we believe this, we cannot progress spiritually. We limit ourselves and our very essence.  We fail to express who we really are.

 Seventh Commandment

“Thou shalt not commit adultery (idolatry)”.  (Exodus 20:14)

This law is fundamental to maintaining the sanctity of the family.  On a deeper level, it is actually talking about idolatry as the Hebrew synonym for adultery is idolatry.  In the Old Testament, these two words are used interchangeably.  The worship of false gods was described as adultery.  In the Old Testament, an adulterous woman who is unfaithful to her husband is making reference to the human soul that is turning away to some other god.

 Eighth Commandment

“Thou shalt not steal”. (Exodus 20:15)

Again, this law is stating that we “cannot steal”, because everything belongs to everyone by Right of Consciousness.  Unless you have the consciousness for something, you cannot keep it, even if you do take it.  When your consciousness of the Presence of God in other people is so strong, no one can take from you what belongs to you by right of that consciousness.

 Ninth Commandment

“Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.” (Exodus 20:16)

Simply, do not tell lies about people.  Apply this rule throughout our lives because whatever we say about another person will happen to us.  “Judge not, that ye be not judged.  For with that judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged; and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”  (Matthew 7).

Likewise, we always express what we are.  We cannot be one thing and express another.   We are always witnessing to what we are.  The true witness is full expression of God in us.  You bear true witness to your neighbor when you regenerate in soul.  Regeneration means building a new soul as opposed to correcting the old one.  When you change the soul, the flesh, skin, blood vessels, nerves, and bones change.  Regeneration always begins with a change in the soul, not by changing things in external reality.    When we really know these things, we are bearing true witness.

 Tenth Commandment

“Thou shalt not covet…anything that is thy neighbors.”  (Exodus 20:17)

Evil in the world is caused by wanting something to which we aren’t entitled by Right of Consciousness.   Moses knew what covetousness does to our soul (the unconscious and subconscious mind).   Coveting affects the soul of man.  Even if you don’t actually act on your coveting, it still rots the soul, shutting you off from God.  To covet something means that you do not understand the Law of Being.  You don’t understand that whatever you are getting or lacking, is the out-picturing and expression of your consciousness.  Until you understand this, you cannot be saved.

There isn’t anything in the world that you every conceived of that God cannot provide.  God is our unlimited source and supply for all.  Therefore, we never need to things in terms of limitation or lack.    God’s supply is infinite.  To envy someone else because they have more or something we want, is to deny our own contact with God.
