Anti-Aging

This section offers a guide to protocols, diets, therapies, nutrients and other resources to promoting anti-aging.  Although none of the therapies in this section have been proven to retard aging, there is suggestive scientific evidence that they do.

Why do we age?  Because there are external and internal forces that cause aging.   The external forces include unhealthy diets, lifestyles, environments, and habits along with pollution, stress, etc.  The internal forces include free radicals, glycosylation, chelation, etc.

Accordingly, there are also internal and external forces that promote anti-aging.  External anti-aging forces include wellness techniques (yoga, meditation, diet, fasting, exercise), stress reduction, positive environment, anti-aging drugs, supplements, and nutrients, cosmetic and other surgical techniques, high-tech medicine, etc.  Internal anti-aging forces include apoptosis,  immune system boosting,  DNA repair, longevity genes, etc. 

Myriad cosmetic techniques are available for anti-aging, from surgical face lifts to wrinkle removals.  A trip to a reputable cosmetic surgeon and dermatologist can accomplish much.  Popular techniques include:

  • Acid Wash for brown spots
  • Microderm  erosion removal
  • Dread Lifts as an alternate form of face lift
  • Fat Transfers to eliminate sunken faces
  • Pimple Extraction
  • Diode Laser wrinkle removal
  • Eye Brow shaping
  • Hylaform for line removal

Teeth can be whitened with veneer cleaning or a zoom whitening treatment. Glasses can be eliminated with lasic eye surgery.

Diet forms an integral part of anti-aging or any health/rejuvenation program.  We recommend you review our section on Holistic Diets based on body type.  The anti-inflammatory food diet described in              new book, "Face Lift by Eating Right Food" results in weight loss and a non-surgical face lift.  The dietary protocol is built upon an anti-inflammatory, protein, low carbohydrate and low fat diet. Anti-inflammatory foods include eggs, strawberries, blue berries, black berries, pomegranate,  chicken, salmon, avocado, lettuce, green tea (in lieu of coffee).

No anti-aging regime is complete with aerobic exercise to tone muscles and burn calories and weight-lifting to build bone.  Palettes are excellent form of toning the body.

Generally proven, safe anti-aging drugs and supplements that you can include in your anti-aging regime are: 

  • Vitamin E

  • Vitamin C

  • Co-enzyme Q10

  • Lipoic acid

  • Folic acid

  • Selenium

  • Flavonoids, carotenes

  • DHEA

  • Vitamin B

  • Carnitin

  • SAM

  • Vinpocetine Cavinton)

  • Deprenyl (Eldepryl)

Unproven, controversial anti-aging drugs include:

  • Phyto-medicines

  • Herbs

  • HGH

  • Gerovital

  • Melatonin

Periodic fasting and caloric restriction can add 40-50 healthy years to a lifespan. A primary, proven method to slow aging and extend lifespan is caloric restriction of a nutrient-rich diet.  This  has been demonstrated to work in rats, mice, and is now being studied in monkeys. While some people practice caloric restriction as a means of extending lifespan, its primary value is as a model to explore how aging can be controlled.

You can achieve a low-calorie lifestyle in two alternative ways:

(a) Regular (continuous) caloric restriction, the same calorie-level every day; or
(b) Periodic total-fasting days, with normal calorie-level on other days.

Which of these two approaches is better?  Although regular caloric restriction has been proved to be an effective life-extending technique, some recommend the alternative approach (periodic fasting). Below we set out some reasons for this.

Fasting can not only extend the lifespan and have beneficial preventive action, it can also be an effective curative and treatment method. While fasting, the whole organism has an opportunity to cure itself, due to an intensification of natural repair processes. Caloric restriction has not been proven to have such powerful curative benefits.

Pleasure of eating. To take an example, if you are aiming for an 1800 kcal daily average and fasting 100 days per year, then on the other days you do not need to restrict yourself to 1800 kcal a day; you can eat a "normal" 2500 kcal ration of daily meals. (You should of course in any case take care to eat healthy, high-quality food).

Psychological benefits. After the second day of fasting you normally do not feel hunger; whereas, while on a calorie-restricted diet, it is not uncommon to feel hunger every day. With experience, it is much easier to get used to fasting.

Religious aspects. In almost every religion there are prescribed fasting-days. If you are a believer you can fast in accordance with the religious calendar, and experience the spiritual benefits as well as the physical ones.

Time saving. While on an ordinary caloric-restriction regime you have to spend time eating meals 365 days per year. But with the alternative method you save that time on fast-days. If fasting 100 days per year, you only spend time eating on the remaining 265 days.
