Change Your Thinking, Change Your Life!

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga, as a preparatory technique, serving to eliminate psychic disturbances manifest in the physical body, is included as a practice in most of the paths. Hatha Yoga is based on the theory of a "subtle body" which parallels the "gross body" (physical body). The subtle body is an energy body which generates the life force called Prana (breath of life).

Hatha Yoga positions (asanas) are designed to release stress and tension from the body that accrues from daily living and life's stressful experiences.  Most people don't feel the tension and stress in their bodies as the process occurs slowly, overtime.  But such stress can result in bodily deformities and negative mental attitudes.   The simple release of this stress through applying a daily regime of yoga positions has profound curative aspects.

There are some basic rules to yoga:

  • Start with gentle yoga positions until your body adjusts to stretching.

  • Never force yourself to hold a position longer than a few seconds after your mind tells you that you cannot hold it anymore.

  • Formal yoga classes under the supervision of a yoga master is recommended.

  • Yoga tools and pillows are recommended, particularly to support the back.

  • Guided yoga audio and video tapes are also recommended.

  • If you have a choice between aerobics and yoga, always choose aerobics first.

Though not considered official yoga positions, doing the Sun Salutations is a good warm-up exercise.  The Sun Salutations is a series of twelve Yoga postures that flow gently from one pose into the next.
