Kalevala Tarot In 1986, while he was working on a book on numerology, Kalervo Aaltonen had the idea of creating a tarot deck based on the Finnish national epic the Kalevala. The Kalevala came into being between 1830 and 1840. It is a collection of some 65,000 poems describing the adventures and tales of the Kalevala heroes and wisemen in their struggle against the Pohjola tribe. In the Kalevala Tarot, the suit names reflect the lifestyle of this period: Stakes, Dishes, Swords and Loaves, as do the natural images created by artist Taina Pailos. The titles are in English, but the Finnish name or reference associated with each card is also given. The Kalevala Tarot is also available as a boxed set with The Kalevala Tarot by Aaltonen. (232 pages).
