Moses was chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. God commanded Moses to tell the children of Israel:
“Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning that which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD” (Ex. 6:6-8).
Moses’ journey has a far greater depth and meaning than we realize. It’s a metaphor for the key steps that we must take in our own spiritual journey towards enlightenment and God realization. We, like Moses, begin as innocent babes, separated from our true parent (s), entering the physical plane; like Moses, we are taught in material knowledge and material ways; like Moses, we are attracted to material baubles and bangles; and like Moses, many of our actions are performed out of ignorance and from bad choices; and like Moses, we hurt, harm and injury others, including ourselves. The final consequences are karmic bondage. We become enslaved and imprisoned in the material world just as Moses becomes Pharaoh’s slave and prisoner.
That God should send ten plagues to visit the people of Egypt demonstrates how the Law of Karma works: “You reap what you so”. We all so what we reap!
However, Moses and his people were able to escape the plagues by painting their doors with red blood and going within their homes which is a metaphor for entering within ourselves and essential following the 8-fold path of yoga, which is the Exodus and Ten Commandments of Moses story…until we awaken to our true natures and realize that we are God’s children destined for Israel. We enter Israel, which is a state of mind, when we become God or Christ realized. Thus, we have completed the journey redemption…we have learned (and applied) how to redeem ourselves.
The foregoing is an over-simplification, but I think you get the idea and a sense of the hidden truths that lie in this Old Testament story as in other great world scriptures. As metaphysicians, I invite you to read these passages and take its pearls of wisdom. But remember, you can only take what you get (by right of consciousness)!
